According to Bloomberg News on January 19, scientists from Google’s artificial intelligence subsidiary, DeepMind, are engaged in discussions with investors to establish an AI startup in Paris. The scientists, who have already submitted their resignations from DeepMind, have been in talks regarding a potential financing round that could secure over 200 million euros ($217.84 million). The startup, currently known as Holistic, is reportedly focused on developing a new AI model. Notably, DeepMind, acquired by Google a decade ago for advancing AI research, is now venturing into the competitive landscape of generative AI chatbots, such as Microsoft-backed ChatGPT.
Google and DeepMind have not provided immediate responses to Reuters’ requests for comments. Meanwhile, Mistral AI, a Paris-based company co-founded by a former DeepMind researcher, disclosed in December that it had successfully raised 385 million euros ($419.34 million) in its second funding round within seven months. This dynamic landscape underscores the evolving nature of AI research and development, with emerging startups and established players seeking to make significant strides in the field.
